This is me preparing for my day. Checking e-mail, scouring the blogs and making phone calls... basically just scrambling to come up with a story idea before the morning meeting
Photojournalist Curt Calhoon at the controls of Unit #40, headed to our noon live shot...a follow up on a big pot bust by the FHP the night before
Quick power nap in the truck on the way to our story. I worked until 12:30 a.m. the night before...I'm a little worn out
On the phone with the public information officer with the FHP, trying to convince him to let us into the secure area behind their building so we can do our noon show live shot next to the SUV that was carrying the illegal cargo
This is how we roll...
Success! Lt. Alex Annunziato dropped everything to meet us at the department and let us in. That's the SUV in the background. I'm getting a quick sound bite with him on the search for the driver for our noon story
Here's a shot inside the back of the SUV. There was more than 100 lbs of marijuana in the back, piled into black garbage bags. You can still see some of the leaves the crime scene techs left behind
The weed is gone but the smell lingers...OMG! I smelled like pot the whole day
"Honestly, it wasn't my fault !!"
"No, I haven't been smoking marijuana... I just smell like it"
"This will make a great profile pic on Facebook" Thanks LT for playing along!
Did you know the FHP has a tank?
Noon show complete...time for lunch
I spend much of our lunch break on the phone trying to figure out where we're headed next
Just found out we're going up to Broward to do a different story for the 6 p.m. news. We log a lot of miles in these trucks
Waiting for the computer to power up so I can begin to look at video of a court hearing that another photographer shot earlier in the day
I like to edit my own stories
Curt is headed up to the front door of the Broward County Jail to wait for the suspect in our story to be released on bond
The scene outside the Broward Jail... Channel 7 is doing the same story
I drove my own car to Fort Lauderdale because I have to race to an Open House at my son's school after the news. The "Press" license plate lets the meter maid know I'm on "official business"
Still waiting for the lady to bond out. As it turns out, she wasn't released until later that night so they took me out of the 6 p.m. news. No story. Oh well, we'll try again tomorrow.
My boys running out to meet me when I get home... love this!
