The Housing Authority of the City of Fort Lauderdale had its grand opening celebration for is newest affordable housing complex Friday. Over 14 blocks were renovated in the area of Northwest 6th Street and 10th Avenue. The area is now called the Northwest Gardens Community.
Over 170 units are available for seniors and families who qualify. Most of the units have been filled but there are still a few available.
Part of the project was constructed by a group of Step Up Apprentices. Through the Housing Authority of Fort Lauderdale, these men and women are given a second chance. Many of these workers learn skills in drafting, plumbing, carpentry, and dry wall through the program.
Apprentice John Davis told Local 10, "It comforts me to see someone like my work and enjoy it!"
The $23 million remodeling project was focused on one of the most impoverished areas in Fort Lauderdale.
