Michael Brewer Returns To School

Teen Set On Fire In October Now Attends School In Palm Beach County

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – Michael Brewer, a 15-year-old South Florida boy who survived being set on fire, went back to school for the first time on Wednesday morning.

Brewer showed up for class at Jeaga Middle School near the Brewer family's new home in Palm Beach County. He could be seen walking into the school with his mother and father.

It appears that Brewer's new school community will be very protective of his return to normality.

"We are all continuing to ask for privacy and dignity for the student (and school) as he and his family try to start a new life," said a statement released Wednesday by Jaega Middle School.

Brewer and his family traveled to New York City on Tuesday to make an appearance on a network news morning show.

The former Deerfield Beach Middle School student has been recovering from second- and third-degree burns over more than half his body. Police said Brewer was at a Deerfield Beach apartment complex in October when a group of teenagers doused him with rubbing alcohol and set him on fire.

Last month, a spokesman for the family said doctors told Brewer that he is progressing so well, he won't need another check up for six months.

Jesus Mendez, 16, and Denver Jarvis and Matthew Bent, both 15, are charged as adults with second-degree attempted murder in the attack. All three pleaded not guilty in November.
