Police said Wednesday that they have identified the driver of a vehicle that hit a University of Miami student earlier this month, killing him.
According to Coral Gables police, a detective identified and obtained a statement from Valentina Andrews Hubsch, 45, whom they believe to be the driver of the car that hit Jared Paul Jones, 21, on Nov. 13 as he crossed Red Road.
Jones died early Tuesday at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Hubsch's attorney said she admitted to driving the car that hit Jones and called it a horrible accident. The attorney said an "unavoidable set of circumstances" led to the crash, but did not elaborate.
The attorney said Hubsch contacted police the day after the crash and has been cooperating in the investigation ever since.
Investigators took possession of the vehicle they said hit Jones and collected DNA samples for laboratory evaluation, according to police.
Coral Gables police said they are working with the State Attorney's Office to formalize the case and that they plan to make an arrest.
Hubsch is a model and actress who has worked as a double for Cameron Diaz. A neighbor said Hubsch is a sweet woman but is known in the neighborhood for putting on makeup and using her cell phone while driving.
