A man died Thursday afternoon after an officer-involved shooting near a Miami middle school.
The shooting occurred near Northwest 13th Avenue and 46th Street, in front of Allapattah Middle School.
Miami police said they received reports that a person was walking in the area with what the callers described as an AK-47 assault weapon. Officers with the Tactical Robbery Unit were in the area and responded to the call.
According to police, one of the officers arrived and got into a confrontation with a person who was carrying a weapon. Police said the officer shot the man.
"The police have to defend themselves," said Miami Police Chief Miguel Exposito. "I'm not saying that this is what occurred here. We don't have enough information to say that, but it appears that this individual was armed."
The injured man, whom police identified as 22-year-old Brandon Foster, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A Miami Fire Rescue ambulance was on its way back to the nearby fire station and was caught in the middle of the gunfire. The truck was riddled with bullet holes, but no fire rescue personnel were injured.
A weapon lying at the scene after the shooting appeared to be a shotgun, not an assault rifle.
No other injuries were reported.
A perimeter was set up in the area Thursday evening, and Allapattah Middle School was put on lockdown. Although school was out at the time of the shooting, many students were there for after-school activities.
