MIAMI – The man who was charged with the stabbing death of an FIU football player was found guilty Wednesday night.
A Miami-Dade County jury deliberated for one hour before finding Quentin Wyche, 25, guilty of second-degree murder with a deadly weapon in the death of Kendall Berry. Wyche faces a possible life sentence.
"I knew it would be guilty," said Berry's mother, Mellisscia Spillman.
Spillman held back tears outside the courtroom, but she couldn't stop them inside as she hugged the prosecution team.
"We waited patiently, and justice has prevailed," Spillman said, "and we are very pleased with the verdict."
Police said Berry, who was a running back for the school's football team, was stabbed to death with a pair of scissors outside the school gym in 2010.
Wyche's attorney, David Peckins, argued the stabbing was in self defense.
Police said the incident began as an argument over a girl.
The final witness Wednesday was one of the most compelling, telling the court a first-hand account of what she heard Wyche say just before he stabbed Berry.
"I'm going to get him. I'm going to get him. I'm going to kill him," the witness replied.
Wyche has admitted stabbing Berry, but that he never meant to kill Berry.
Wyche's mother wiped away tears in court as her son was handcuffed, fingerprinted and led away to a possible life sentence.
"He will go to jail for whatever amount of time, but he has a chance to repent of his sins," said Berry's father, Derek Spillman. "Our son is in Heaven and we are going to remain in that state of mind so someday, we can be there with him."
