Dispatcher helps 11-year-old girl deliver baby

Girl translates instructions, helps deliver cousin's baby

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – An emergency services dispatcher in Boynton Beach helped an 11-year-old girl walk her family through the delivery of her cousin's baby boy.

About 8:40 a.m. Aug. 8, Eularia Francisco called 911 and told dispatcher Shamika Rollins that her cousin, Cadeleria Francisco, was about to have her baby.

"The baby is coming," Francisco told Rollins.

At the time, the sixth grader was the only one home who spoke English. She then translated instructions for her Guatemalan family.

"Tell them to gently wipe off the baby's mouth and nose," said Rollins.

"Okay. Done," replied Francisco.

"Dry the baby off with a clean towel," said Rollins.

"Uh huh."

"Then, wrap the baby in a clean, dry towel," said Rollins.

"Okay, we're done."

"There should be a fire truck outside or a rescue truck outside. Can you go open the door for them?" asked Rollins.

"Okay."

Jose Francisco weighed six pounds when he was born.

"I couldn't ask for a better caller then the 11-year-old," Rollins told Local 10 on Tuesday. "She was extremely and amazingly calm, and I only thought of my own [14-year-old] daughter and I wanted to make sure she got the same thing I'd want for her if it was her on the other line."

Rollins added that Eularia Francisco may have a future as a dispatcher.

Both baby and mother are doing well.
