Men looking to shed unwanted fat are turning to coolsculpting to tweak their physiques.
Andy Fox does everything he can to keep himself healthy and fit. The 62-year-old began the effort 12 years ago when he started losing energy and putting on weight.
"I just got to the point where I wasn't feeling good about myself and I just decided to do something about it," said Fox.
With the help of a personal trainer, Fox lost 47 pounds, but still couldn't get rid of some pockets of fat.
It's a problem that also plagued Raul Sosa since he lost 60 pounds.
"I'm hoping to get the troubled areas that are a pain in the butt in the gym that you can't get rid of, so those are the spots that I'm focusing on," said Sosa.
Sosa and Fox both turned to Dr. Leyda Bowes, a dermatologist in Miami, for a non-invasive procedure called coolsculpting.
"Men are less likely to go to the or to have a procedure and they find cool sculpting very convenient, very doable," said Bowes.
The cool sculpting device destroys fat cells through freezing. Suction cups are placed on the targeted area for one hour. Eight weeks later, maximum results are achieved.
"What we know is that fat cells are very susceptible to cold exposure while, at these temperatures, skin cells and muscles do not get affected," said Bowes.
"You really don't feel anything, it's no pain, and that gel they put on top of you, it also like it numbs that area that they're working on," said Sosa.
Fox treated his chest, stomach, and hips. He said the change is shape was more than he ever expected.
"I feel very good about what cool sculpting has done for me and I think it took me over the last hurdle I couldn't cross with exercise and diet," said Fox. "I get a lot of compliments on how I look and that makes me feel very good."
Men with fat behind the abdominal wall, those with a "beer belly," are not good candidates for the procedure. Because fat is more fibrous in men, more than one treatment may be necessary to achieve desired results.
Patients typically see up to a 25 percent reduction in the fat layer following the procedure.
The treatment costs start at $700 for one small area. Doctors said most people have several areas to treat.
