A doctor at the Broward Health Medical Center delivered his own son in the parking lot outside the hospital.
Dr. Timothy Hawkes, an orthopedic resident at Broward Health Medical Center, was home early Tuesday when his wife realized her water broke.
"Her water broke in the bathroom and she says, 'It's time to go,'" said Hawkes.
Hawkes began driving his wife, 5-year-old son, and 3-year-old daughter to the Broward Health Medical Center. On the way, he realized the baby was crowning.
"By the time we had gotten to the freeway, I just felt like I needed to check her so I checked her and the baby was -- it was coming," said Hawkes.
Hawkes pulled into the parking lot of the emergency room and realized they weren't going to make it through the doors.
So, in the car, Hawkes delivered his son Liam about 1 a.m.
"I was holding the baby's head with one hand and then I put it in park with the other," said Hawkes.
"He's been in charge since the very beginning, so we're not surprised he came out this way," said Katelin.
Hawkes has completed his OB/GYN training, helping soothe his wife Katelin's nerves.
"This is the way to go. I recommend everyone try it at least once," said Katelin.
The parents said their other two children were cheering them on from the back seat of the car.
"They noticed I was fine and I said, 'Look, we have a baby,'" said Katelin.
