MIAMI – An Arthur Hearing was held Monday for a man accused of killing his wife even though her body has never been found.
Police arrested 55-year-old Jesus Maqueira in February and charged him with first-degree murder and aggravated stalking. His wife, Raquel Calderin, was last seen Sept. 4, 2012.
"He ultimately said, 'Listen, fine, I killed her. Take me to jail already,'" said Miami-Dade Police Detective Juan Segovia. "He would just say, 'Well, show me the body. Show me the body,' and he would laugh at us. When I acknowledged that, you're right, we don't have a body, he just laughed at us and said, 'Exactly, you have no evidence.'"
Segovia also discussed two letters allegedly written by Maqueira, one apparently to Calderin and another to God.
"I always loved you [sic] I never wanted things to end between you and me [sic] I didn't want you to get away from me [sic] not a day goes by without stopping to think about you," he wrote.
Calderin was last seen after leaving Gloria Floyd Elementary School, where she worked as a custodian. Cell phone records show Maquiera was near the school at the time his wife disappeared, say police. Calderin was on the phone shortly after leaving work when the call dropped.
The two lived with their children in southwest Miami-Dade County.
Police say Maquiera was angry because his wife wanted a divorce, adding that their 20-year marriage was plagued by violence.
Authorities claim Maquiera stalked Calderin after she left him and at one point put a GPS tracking device on her car.
