Miami-Dade police Special Response Team officers shot and killed a man while serving a narcotics warrant in Miami Lakes on Wednesday night, police said.
Police said the incident happened at about 8 p.m. at 6915 Bottlebrush Dr. in Miami Lakes.
Officers knocked on the door of a home and were confronted by a man with a gun, Miami Lakes police said.
One or more of the officers shot and killed the man, whom police later identified as Michael Ray Santana, 26, of Miami.
"Often, we have intelligence on this person prior to entering. In this case, we did, and we believe that the man that confronted us that was armed was, in fact, the man that we were looking at as part of our investigation," said Roy Rutland, of the Miami-Dade Police Department.
Investigators said the officers followed the right procedure, by first knocking and then announcing their presence before going into the home.
"This is a high-risk search warrant, and that is why we utilize our special response team," Rutland said.
None of the officers were injured.
Miami-Dade police said that in the home, they found multiple guns and large amounts of narcotics that were packaged for sale.
