1 dead after police-involved shooting

Victim fatally shot in Miami Gardens

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A man accused of killing his stepfather was shot and killed by police in Miami Gardens Monday.

Detectives say officers were investigating a homicide near NW 208th Street and 25th Avenue when a man started shooting at them.

"Its a justified shooting, the officers had to not only protect their own lives immediately, but had to protect the lives of the people in the community," said John Rivera, the president of the Police Benevolent Association of Miami-Dade County.

"He brandished his firearm and started to aggressively approach the officers while firing at the officers trying to kill them, they returned fire."

A man told Local 10's Jacey Birch he was related to both men who died. Ernest Sinord says the man shot by police was his wife's cousin. The man he was accused of shooting was that man's stepfather.

"It's very hard, this is very hard to see something like that happen and it was shock, we're shocked," Sinord said. He added that his wife's cousin was a quiet person who didn't talk much.

The Miami Gardens officers who fired their guns at him have been placed on administrative duty.
