Man injured in police-involved shooting in Hialeah

Police say shooting happened Tuesday night in Publix parking lot

HIALEAH, Fla. ā€“ A man was injured Tuesday night after a shooting that police say happened in the parking lot of a Publix store in Hialeah.

"I was just inside and I heard the gunshot and the lady screaming," said Diana Perez, a woman who was at the Publix. "And everybody running in and closing the doors."

Shoppers who heard the shots around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday took cover outside and inside the Publix supermarket, located at 1290 68th Street, right next door to a CVS.

An on-duty Hialeah police officer, who was working security detail at the grocery store, reportedly confronted the man who was shot in the parking lot before the shooting happened.

Witnesses initially reported that the man who was shot may have been attempting a robbery or a carjacking, but detectives are still working to figure out exactly what happened.

"We were coming out of the CVS and we see two guys arguing," said witness Jonathan Rodriguez. "He said, 'Let me have your car.'"

"We heard this might have been a shootout," said Carl Zogby of the Hialeah Police Department. "I hadn't heard that, but that's part of the investigation."

Customers who were at the store at the time of the shooting were not allowed to leave for about 30 minutes.

"A male who was shot near the lung area was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center," said Hialeah Fire Department Capt. Cesar Espinosa.

The condition of the victim is unknown at this time.
