1 person, 3 horses killed in barn fire

Cause of fire under investigation

NW MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – One person and three horses were killed early Sunday morning in a barn fire in Northwest Miami-Dade.

The incident happened at the Rubio Ranch near Northwest 122nd Avenue and 157th Street. Miami-Dade Police say the owners of the barn called 911 around 1 a.m. when they saw the flames.

When police and fire crews arrived they were unable to put the fire out immediately since there were no fire hydrants nearby.

"We were not able to establish a water supply because there were no hydrants nearby...We had to do a specialized operation and draft, which is taking water out of a body of water (canal) and relaying it to the scene," said Miami-Dade Chief Fire Officer, Cesar Fabal.

The stables at the barn were a total loss, but officials say there were other animals that did survive the fire.

Police say the victim killed lived in small quarters that were part of the stables.

The identity of the victim has not been released yet.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Giselle Marino from Miami Dade Fire Rescue said since there was a human death in the fire, the cause could take a little bit longer to determine.
