1 person shot in North Miami Beach, airlifted to hospital

Neighbors run for cover when men in cars open fire at each other

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Neighbors were running for cover Monday morning when men in two cars started shooting at each other shortly after 10:30 a.m. in the alley behind Northeast 159th Street, between 12th and 13th avenues.

Residents said they heard at least eight shots.

"I threw myself the ground," said one woman, who asked not to be identified.

She she was in her backyard trimming her bushes when the bullets started whizzing by.

"I was afraid to run to my kitchen because I thought one could hit me, so I just stayed there until it stopped," she told Local 10 News.

North Miami police swarmed the area. They broke into one home with guns drawn, looking for the gunmen.

The two cars were abandoned in the alley. One was a silver Mercedes, which had a handgun on the truck. The other was a green sedan that sustained significant front-end damage.

At least one person was shot. That victim stumbled into the neighborhood looking for help. Willy Goggoie said the guy ended up inside his house.

"I went here, went to go back inside and then I turned around and the guy was behind me and he pulled the door and he fell in front of my door," Goggoie said.

The victim left a pool of blood in his doorway before he was rushed to the hospital. Police took two people into custody, but it's still unclear what prompted the shooting.

Arrests are pending and the victim underwent surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital. His condition is unknown.

The victim's identity has not been released.
