11 horses, 1 steer rescued from illegal slaughterhouse in SW Miami-Dade

Animals now in care of SPCA

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Eleven horses and one steer have been rescued from an illegal slaughterhouse in Southwest Miami-Dade.

Sky 10 was over the scene of the property in the east Everglades Wednesday morning where the animals were found.

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals officials told Local 10 News that police raided the farm on Monday after receiving a tip and took one person into custody.

"I believe most of the animals would have been slaughtered," said Laurie Waggoner of the SPCA. "There was active slaughtering going on. There were trees that you can see were covered in blood that animals were tied to."

The animals' conditions ranged from emaciated to in decent shape, but none appeared to be in good health. SPCA officials said all of the horses are expected to make a full recovery.

At this time, it is unclear where the horses came from, but officials said three may have been former race horses.

The animals are now in the care of the SPCA. They will be put up for adoption once they are fully healed.
