A man has been arrested after police say he was involved in a crash that killed a 13-year-old girl and then ran away from the scene Friday morning
Miami-Dade police said Sandor Guillen, 38, of Coral Gables, was driving south on the Busway when his Range Rover Sport hit T-boned a silver minivan going east on Southwest 184th Street at around 6 a.m.
The impact was so powerful, the SUV stopped more than a block away from the site of impact.
"We saw two cars totaled, especially the minivan," said Jimar Blanco, who was taking her kids to school at the time of the accident.
Police said Guillen got out of his vehicle and ran away, but officers caught him.
Guillen was taken to Kendall Regional Hospital in stable condition.
Kaely Camacho, 13, who was riding in the minivan, was flown to Ryder Trauma Center, where she died, Miami-Dade police said.
Camacho's father, Kirk Camcho, 47, and her sister, Breeann Camacho, 16, who were also in the vehicle, were treated at a hospital and released, police said.
Kaely Camacho was an eighth-grader in the magnet dance program Southwood Middle School.
"She was a beautiful, sweet young girl, and she always had a smile on her face, and she would hug you. She was best friends with a bunch of girls from Southwood, and they are totally devastated," said Karen Sikes, who knew Kaely. "She was a dancer and a cheerleader. She was an all-around girl. She was wonderful."
Kaely was supposed to be at her first dance rehearsal Friday for the spring show. That practice was cancelled and her classmates and fellow dancers are now planning a video memorial for her.
Charges against Guillen are pending.
Investigators said they do not believe Guillen was drag racing, but they are looking into the possibility that alcohol may have been involved.
The driver was not supposed to be on the Busway, police said, because the road is reserved for county transit vehicles.
