Mother, son killed in ambush-style shooting in Kendall

Suspect in shooting detained

KENDALL, Fla. – A mother and son are dead Thursday after a home invasion and shooting in Kendall.

The shooting happened about 4 a.m. at 14333 SW 97th Terrace.

Miami-Dade police said the bodies of Gale Sikora, 52, and her 23-year-old son, Anthony Sikora, were found inside the home.

Police said the gunman first tried to shoot out the front door with a shotgun, but the door wouldn't open. He then went around back and blasted out the sliding-glass doors.

Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said multiple weapons were used in the ambush.

"This could have been something that perhaps has been going on previous days before within the relationship ... between the two guys," Zabaleta said.

Gale Sikora was a nurse at Baptist Hospital.

"Our hearts go out to Gale's family and colleagues," Randy Lee, chief operating officer at Baptist Hospital, said in a statement. "She was a wonderful employee and we are very saddened by this tragedy."

Police detained the suspect in the shooting. His identity hasn't been released.
