Elderly couple struck, killed by car in Deerfield Beach

Philip Kendall, Francine Freedman had just moved to Boca Raton

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – An elderly couple is dead after being struck by a car in Deerfield Beach, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The fatal crash happened Wednesday evening on Ocean Boulevard.

BSO spokeswoman Gina Carter said Philip Kendall, 85, and Francine Freedman, 80, were crossing Ocean Drive when they were struck by a Lexus.

The driver of the car, Mark Lasman, remained at the scene.

"I yelled for my wife to call 911," Howard Comstock told Local 10 News. "I checked on the woman and she was already -- I mean, it was obvious that she was already passing. He, by the time I got over to him, he was gurgling."

Carter said the couple had just moved to Boca Raton days earlier.

Residents who spoke to Local 10 said a broken street light in the area may be to blame.

"This place is dark," resident Christopher Virtue told Local 10. "It's not well lit."

Comstock said the driver "was just wailing."

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
