2-year-old boy has weight loss surgery

Saudia Arabian toddler is youngest bariatric surgery patient on record

A 2-year-old Saudi Arabian boy has become the youngest weight loss surgery patient on record.

The boy weighed 73 pounds at the time of his stomach-stapling surgery, according to Australia's News Network.

At 14 months, he already weighed 47 pounds and suffered from sleep apnea. His legs had also started to bow in.

Efforts to keep the boy's weight in check weren't working (although doctors weren't certain his parents had stuck to their strict diet), so surgeons opted to remove the outer part of the boy's stomach in 2010, according to a report published in the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports.

In just two months, the boy lost 15 percent of his body weight.

At age 4, he weighed around 53 pounds and has a normal Body Mass Index.

Obesity experts called the case "shocking" and warned such surgery could cause vitamin deficiencies and impact future growth.
