3,000 receive holiday food vouchers

Three thousand families received holiday meal vouchers from The Latin Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday morning.
The line stretched down Northwest 14th Avenue as hundreds waited for days to collect a voucher for a complete Christmas dinner for five. The meal includes turkey, vegetables, milk and pie.
For the past 27 years, The Latin Chamber of Commerce has run this holiday program. The food baskets will be distributed December 19th. Most of the food is donated.
By Wednesday morning, many had been waiting in line for days.
"We had a good time. We met many people, and we got together with old friends," said Juanita Alvarez, the second person in line. Alvarez had been waiting in line for eight days.
Most of those in line said the wait is a small price to pay for food on their Christmas table.
"It actually makes me feel good. I'm sacrificing myself for my kids. Thanks to them I'm getting food for them," said Yamile Lopez. "I'm here for my four kids because that brings good to my table."
"Thanks to this, my family is going to have a good holiday," said Maria Zamora.
Despite giving away 3,000 vouchers, some were still turned away.
"If we give out 3,000, 4,000 will be here. If we give out 5,000, 6,000 will be here," said Luis Cuervo with the Latin Chamber of Commerce. "This is one of the greatest things we do. We love how it makes us feel."
