Miami-Dade Fire Rescue: Pesticide spills out of shampoo container

MIAMI – A toxic chemical was found Monday in a checked piece of luggage at Miami International Airport.

The container that was found had what officials believed to be a pesticide. Five security officers were treated by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue at the airport, but were sent to a local hospital for further evaluation.

The incident was initially reported as a chemical spill at gate D25. Transportation Security Administration workers were loading luggage onto an American Airlines aircraft when they smelled the pesticide, according to an airport spokesperson.

"Two of the patients are vomiting," said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokeswoman Griselle Marino.

An airport spokeswoman said the spill wasn't threatening other passengers.

The owner of the luggage was located and was being interviewed by TSA officials and local law enforcement.
