5th grader brings gun to school

No injuries reported, investigation continues

DORAL, Fla. – An 11-year-old boy brought a loaded gun to a Doral elementary school on Friday, according to the Miami-Dade County School Board.

The school board says another student who saw the gun alerted a teacher who then notified the school's principal.

"I am disheartened by the news that this morning one of our students brought in a firearm to John I. Smith K-8 Center," said school board member Susie Castillo.

Castillo said the boy -- who is a special needs student -- was promptly removed from the school and no other students were harmed.

"This incident highlights the responsibility that we as adults have to maintain firearms out of the reach of children," she added.

According to the Miami-Dade County School's Police Chief, the gun had a trigger lock on it and could not have been fired.

School officials told Local10's John Turchin that the boy will likely be suspended and expulsion will be recommended.

School board member Raquel Regalado, however, said she hoped the punishment is not quite as harsh, considering the boy is a special needs student.

The boy's family is said to be cooperating with the investigation.
