A student brought an Airsoft pistol to his middle school in Key West, police say.
The incident happened at Horace O'Bryant Middle School about 8:53 a.m. Thursday.
The Key West Police Department reported it received calls about a student displaying the replica gun. The student said he brought it to school to return it to his friend, who is also a student there.
Police recovered the Airsoft pistol from the student's backpack.
“We want to make sure we keep parents informed, and that all parents who have students at the school are aware of what actually happened, instead of being frightened by rumors,” said Monroe County Schools Superintendent Mark Porter. “We’ve worked hard to make sure we have safety procedures in place just in case something like this happens. We are extremely proud of the student who reported this. All operations have returned to normal at the school."
Detectives were interviewing both students.
