Burglar steals $3,000 from school

Man breaks into St. Michael's School in Miami

MIAMI ā€“ Police are looking for a burglar who broke into a school in Miami and stole more than $3,000 meant to pay for holiday celebrations, outreach programs, and special school functions.

The burglary at St. Michael's School, located at 300 NW 28th Avenue, happened between 7 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday.

"It is offensive, the timing of it, because of the Christmas holiday. (It) is very, very sad," said Archdiocese of Miami Director of Communications Mary Ross Agosta.

Cameras captured photos of the burglar. He broke into a classroom and a portable classroom, ransacking both, said police.

"St. Michael's School is a school in the working class community," said Agosta. "Catholic schools operate on a much different type budget. You know we don't receive tax money, so it is all through the generosity of the parents."

Although disappointed, school officials plan on using it as a teaching moment for their students.

"Christmas time is a joyful time for Christians. We would ask that the perpetrator would perhaps rethink what he has done and come forward to return the money," said Agosta. "You know, we don't know why this was done, but we know that God would ask us to forgive him."

Anyone with information on the burglary is asked to call Miami Police at 305-579-6111.
