Driver wanted in fatal hit-and-run

Woman hit, killed on I-595 east of I-95

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol is looking for a driver who hit a woman walking on Interstate 595 and kept going.

The fatal hit-and-run crash happened east of Interstate 95 about 9 p.m. Wednesday.

FHP says the woman was walking in the eastbound lanes of I-595 when she was hit by a vehicle traveling eastbound. Two more vehicles hit her, but those drivers stopped.

"Any time you have a pedestrian hit by a vehicle, several vehicles -- I mean, we've had other incidents where pedestrians have been hit on the interstate and the scenes are very gruesome," FHP sergeant Mark Wysocky said.

The eastbound lanes of I-595 reopened about 1 a.m. Thursday.

FHP didn't release a description of the vehicle or the woman's name.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call FHP at 954-837-4012 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
