Eco-Hero finalist Kelsey Peeples

South Miami Middle Community School

Whether it's producing the news at South Miami Middle School's state of the art studios, or anchoring the broadcast viewed by the schools 1,000 students, 14-year-old Kelsey Peeples has a nose for news.

Her natural curiosity inspired the 8th grader to come up with an award-winning science fair project that's on it's way to an international contest.

"I did an experiment about how cloud cover relates to solar radiation entering the earth's atmosphere and warming the earth, which will relate to climate change," Kelsey said.

The project took two months of field work, using NASA technology, followed by five months of number crunching. Kelsey's findings will soon be published by Harvard University, which named her a "Scientist of the Future."

The environment is her top priority.

"It's important that we preserve it for future generations -- for kids like me who are going to be kids like me in 100 years or so," Kelsey said.

Kelsey is a member of her school's Enviroment Club, caring daily for a variety of animals. And she is excited about the possibility of a trip to Peru as our Eco Hero.

"Machu Picchu is definitely a huge opportunity to expand my mind culturally," she said.

And her mind is one open to learning everything she can. Whether it's science or broadcasting -- or something in between -- Kelsey says the sky truly is the limit.

"I am in many different places at once with all the stuff I have going on" she said. "And I want to try as many things as I can."
