HAVANA -

Fidel Castro came out of seclusion this week to help inaugurate a new school in Havana.

Pictures posted on the government run newspaper "Granma" showed the 86 year old talking with a group of students at the new school in Playa, a neighborhood near the capital.

It is the first time the former Cuban leader has been seen since February's election. Castro did not attend the funeral of his friend and ally, late Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez.

Castro gave up his post as president to brother Raul five years ago because of his ailing health. His public appearances are kept to a minimum.
