More than 500 kids experienced a day full of outdoor activities at the first annual event last year.

"It was a great feeling to know that kids really responded to an initiative that was created by kids for kids. It made us realize that we could not have reached the success we had without our dedicated team of Fit Kids Day ambassadors," said Village of Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner.

The initiative started in late 2011, when Sofia Victoria de la Peña, a 6th grader at Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, envisioned a day full of outdoor sports and activities that kids from the community could participate in.

"My goal was to get my friends to go outdoors and play, get people moving and informed about healthy eating habits in an effort to reduce childhood obesity. I never imagined a conversation with my friends during lunch time would turn into this, but I am happy that we have reached so many kids in the community," said Sofia, Ambassador Chair for the initiative.
The ambassadors of the initiative, made up of school age-children from around the community, were honored during the 2012 event by both Mayor Lerner and Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez for their hard work and dedication to make the community a healthier place.

May 5, 2012 was also officially proclaimed "Fit Kids Day" by Mayor Gimenez.
