Fort Lauderdale man killed while crossing street

A pedestrian died after being hit by a vehicle in Fort Lauderdale Saturday, according to authorities.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -

Police identified the person who died after a car hit him while he was crossing a street in Fort Lauderdale.

Investigators said Lawrence Weir, 59, of Fort Lauderdale, was taken to Broward Medical Center after the crash where he later died.

The accident happened just before 7 p.m. on Saturday at Northwest 31st Avenue and 14th Street.

An eyewitness on the scene told Local 10's Christina Vasquez Weir was jaywalking and the driver of a white van couldn't stop in time.

According to police, Donald Evans, 58, was driving a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 van northbound in the center lane of the 1300 block of Northwest 31st Avenue. Evans changed lanes into the right northbound lane at the same time Weir was crossing the roadway.

Police said Evans stopped his vehicle immediately after the crash and cooperated with authorities.

Locals said the road is dark and has limited crosswalks.
