Funeral set for teen fatally shot; search for killer continues

Police think shooting was case of mistaken identity

MIAMIFamily and friends of a teen shot and killed over the weekend helped to pass out fliers Thursday, hoping to generate leads in the case.

Bryan Herrera, 16, was shot at the corner of NW 39th Street and 11th Avenue on Saturday, while riding his bicycle to a friend's home.

On Thursday, students at Miami Jackson High walked the neighborhood where the shooting took place.

Miami-Dade Superintendent Alberto Carvalho joined Herrera's family to speak with to neighbors in the area.

"This is the very first school I taught at and I'm tired of burying my kids," Carvalho said.

Some of Herrera's classmates, including his best friend, gathered at the school earlier in the day to meet with his family.

On Monday, Herrera's parents made an emotional plea for information on who killed their son.

"Bryan was the future for all of us," said his father William.

Police say the teen was riding his bicycle to friend's house when he was shot in the back along Northwest 11th Avenue and 38th Street.

Authorities believe the shooting was a case of mistaken identity.

A viewing for Herrera is taking place Thursday night and his funeral is set for Friday at 9 a.m.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami Police at 305-603-6350.
