Giant African Land Snails spotted near Coral Gables
The Florida Department of Agriculture is asking residents in Miami-Dade County to report sightings of Giant African Land Snails in the area.
On May 26, inspectors found mature snails in homes near the south end of the Coral Gables border.
A survey is now taking place in an area near the 7600 block of S.W. 52nd Court.
The Giant African Land Snails are known to carry parasites that can possibly lead to meningitis in humans as well as cause structural damage to buildings.
Residents who believe they have spotted the snails are asked to contact the Florida Department of Agriculture at 1-888-397-1517.
