Guardrail goes through front of car

Driver arrested in SR 836 crash

MIAMI – A guardrail went through the front of a Scion xB in a crash on the Dolphin Expressway.

The crash happened near Northwest 87th Avenue about 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Alberto Leon, the driver, fell asleep at the wheel, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

"He was already out of the vehicle when I arrived on scene," said Florida Highway Patrol trooper Russell Cruz. "He explained to me what happened. He said that he'd been working long hours and just fell asleep as he was traveling home."

The vehicle was traveling about 55 mph.

"The driver rotated clockwise and came to a final rest facing northbound," said Cruz. "Luckily, the driver was able to walk away with minor injuries."

Video showed the guardrail penetrated the front of the vehicle and came out the back window.

"If the guardrail had been a foot or two over to the other side of the vehicle, it could have been a lot worse," said Cruz.

Leon, 36, suffered minor cuts. He was charged with driving with a suspended license.
