Gun buyback event trades guns for gift cards

Receive up to $150 in gift certificates for turning in a weapon

MIAMI – The City of Miami and the Miami Police Department are offering gift certificates and tickets to Miami Heat games in exchange for guns. On Saturday, officials will hold a second gun buyback event this month in Overtown.

People can turn in their weapons, no questions asked between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, at Saint John Baptist Church at 1328 NW 3 Avenue.

Officials will give out up to $150 in gift cards to Walmart and Winn Dixie. Anyone who turns in an assault style rifle will receive two lower level tickets to a Miami Heat game in March.

Last week's buyback collected 130 guns.

Another buyback event is scheduled for February 2. On that day, gun owners can turn over their weapons from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at San Juan Bosco Church at 1301 W. Flagler Street.
