Judge sentences hit-and-run driver

Harvey Abraham sentenced to 6 years in prison in Ashley Valdez's death

MIAMI – A judge sentenced a man to six years in state prison after he was convicted in the fatal hit-and-run of an 11-year-old girl.

Harvey Abraham was also sentenced to eight years probation Thursday. A jury previously found him guilty of leaving the scene of an accident involving death and tampering with evidence.

According to court documents, Abraham hit and killed 11-year-old Ashley Valdez near Southwest 80th Street and 149th Avenue on Jan. 9, 2009.

"I'm going to have the pain of your daughter for the rest of my life," said Abraham. "Whatever you need me to do, I will do. I'm truly sorry."

"Are you really sorry, or are you sorry you got caught?" said Adonay Rosete, Valdez's mother. "Leaving her there to die alone was a choice."

The Miami-Dade Police Department later launched a text message and e-mail alert program in honor of Valdez after her death.
