FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -

Meteorologist Betty Davis knows a thing or two about Earth’s lower atmosphere. On Wednesday, she had a chance to feel like she was flying through it while inside the First Baptist Church of Fort Lauderdale.

In its 29th year, the church’s annual Christmas pageant has become a mainstay in the South Florida community. As performers made their final preparations before Wednesday’s dress rehearsal, Betty was invited to take a spin high above the sanctuary like the angels in the pageant.

Fitted with a halo and harness and hoisted up onto a cabling system, Betty fluttered effortlessly about 50 feet from the floor.

“I think viewers are getting to know a side of me they never thought they would see,” she laughed.

The pageant is a high-tech, big-dollar production. Lasting more than two-and-a-half hour and featuring live animals, musical numbers, a pyrotechnics display and set changes, the performance has captured national attention. Artistic director Jeff Crevier said people are often surprised to learn the performers are not professionals; they’re church members.

“Once that orchestra starts in and once that curtain goes up and they are able to see the quality of singer and dancers and theatrics that we are able to do, all around the Christmas holiday, all around the Christmas spirit and the true meaning of Christmas, they are totally blown away,” Crevier said.

Betty might not be part of the actual cast, but after Wednesday’s flight, she’s with the pageant in spirit.

“I'm already excited about coming back to actually see the show,” she said.

Opening night is Friday and tickets are still available. To learn more about the pageant and the schedule of shows, click here: www.christmastickets.com.
