Deputies say an early morning confrontation between two off-duty security guards and a man playing loud music ended in a fatal shooting.
It happened along Northwest 36th Street and 45th Avenue at the Whispering Palms Apartments shortly past 3 a.m. Thursday.
Upon arriving, deputies said they found the lifeless body of a man lying between two cars and the two security guards on scene.
Investigators determined the two security guards work at the Whispering Palms Apartments. One of them also lives there.
The co-workers were returning from a night out when they heard loud music coming from a dark-colored sedan parked in the parking lot. The two security guards approached the vehicle and one of them asked the music listener to lower the volume, police said.
According to investigators, the exchange escalated when the man stepped out of his vehicle and confronted one of the security guards. The victim reached in the direction of the guard’s gun, investigators said. The second guard, who watched the entire scene unfold, feared for their safety and shot the victim, police said.
Both security guards remained at the scene waiting for deputies to arrive and have cooperated fully with investigators.
The security guards were armed and both have valid concealed weapons permits. A third security guard, who was on duty and witnessed the incident, provided a corroborating statement to investigators, police said.
The body of the victim was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office. The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. The identities of the security guards are being withheld at this time due to security concerns, police said.
