DETROIT -

Trayvon Martin's parents were recognized on Sunday for creating a foundation in honor of their teenage son. Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton were applauded for their work with the Justice For Trayvon Martin Foundation during a banquet in Detroit, MI.

Martin's parents started the organization in March, less than a month after the 17-year old Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School student was shot and killed in Sanford. Neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman has said that he shot the teen after being attacked.

According to the foundation's website, its mission is to make changes to Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law and put legislation into effect to "prevent the inappropriate application of Stand Your Ground principles."

Before the event, the pair spoke about how difficult the holidays have been without their son.

"Thanksgiving was difficult, I'm not looking forward to Christmas right now," Fulton said. "I'm used to having both of my kids with me during the holidays so it's going to be very difficult."

The second-degree murder case is set to begin in June 2013.
