Police: Man charged with DUI after striking pedestrian

Willie Joseph Pitts Jr., 31, struck pedestrian, then fled scene

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – Police say a man has been arrested for allegedly hitting a pedestrian and fleeing the scene in North Miami.

Officials said the incident occurred Saturday at 4:45 am as the pedestrian was crossing NW 134 Street at NW 12 Avenue.

According to police, Willie Joseph Pitts Jr., 31, was driving a white Honda Accord when he hit 45-year-old Philogene Charles.

Police said Pitts Jr. fled the scene without stopping, rendering aid or contacting police.

Witnesses provided police with a description of the vehicle, which was located five blocks away from the scene with Pitts Jr. asleep behind the wheel.

Pitts Jr. was arrested and charged with DUI with serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury, and DUI.

Police said Charles was transported to Jackson Ryder Trauma in critical condition.
