Authorities released new details about a fatal police-involved shooting in southwest Miami-Dade County on Tuesday.
Police said Alexis Suarez Reyes, 47, died Tuesday after a fight with police outside his home in the 1900 block of SW 107th Avenue.
According to authorities, two detectives went to the man's home because they had probable cause to arrest him in connection with an aggravated battery investigation. Instead of making the arrest, detectives said they were forced to shoot Reyes when he raised a Smith and Wesson semi-automatic firearm at them.
The investigation stemmed from an incident at Miami International Airport, police said. Authorities said Reyes was a subcontracted and unarmed security guard at a private facility on MIA property.
Reyes had a concealed carry permit for the firearm, police said. The shooting has been questioned by the suspect's family, who told Local 10 that Reyes had the gun and bulletproof vest because of his job.
MDPD said the detectives in the shooting are both veterans with more than 23 years of experience at the department.
