Police: Thieves stole neighbors' Christmas decorations

Christmas crime was caught on camera

SWEETWATER, Fla. – Two women were arrested after stealing the Christmas display from their neighbors' yard, police said.

Sweetwater police said Guadalupe Valdes, 18, and two friends stole the ornaments Tuesday.

According to the arrest form, the trio went into the victim's front yard and started unplugging some inflatable holiday decorations and pulling the stakes out of the ground. Police said the thieves took four decorations, valued at $410, and left.

Surveillance video showed the three people grabbing decorations from Omar Sanchez's front yard.

"Who would steal ornaments from another family?" Sanchez said. "My family is fortunate to actually have these, and I have pity for her family, but it doesn't mean that she could go around stealing. It's not right."

Police said the trio set up the stolen decorations in their own yard just one block away.

"They'll be on Santa's naughty list," Sanchez said. "They broke the law, and Santa's not going to like that."

Valdes is charged with third-degree grand theft. She faced a judge Friday and was issued pretrial release.

The third person seen in the video, a man, has not been arrested. Police said they know who the suspect is, and they hope to take him into custody soon.
