ALLAPATTAH, Fla. -

Miami police identified the driver who hit two people, killing one of them, before crashing into a liquor store in Allapattah Tuesday morning.

Liquor store surveillance video Henry Maffett was driving northbound on Northwest 7th Avenue approaching 28th Street when he crossed into the southbound lanes, drove on the sidewalk, and hit Carlos Characa and Dario Hernandez outside Laguna Seafood Restaurant about 10 a.m., police say.

Maffett's Dodge Durango then crashed into a liquor store at 2820 NW 7th Avenue. Surveillance video captured the moment it hit the building.

Hernandez, 62, was pronounced dead when fire rescue arrived.

Maffett, 61, and Characa, 58, were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Maffett was listed in serious condition and Characa was listed in critical condition Wednesday.

It's unclear why Maffett crossed the avenue and drove onto the sidewalk.
