MIAMI – A judge instructed a 15-year-old boy accused of fatally shooting another student on a South Florida bus about what he can do while out of jail on bond.
Jordyn Howe appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Ellen Venzer on Wednesday morning.
"I'm going to be putting in several restrictions so that there is no question about what I expect from you," Venzer told Howe.
Howe is charged with manslaughter with a deadly weapon, carrying a concealed firearm, and possession of a firearm by a minor. He will be allowed to attend school and church while out on $1,000 bond.
"There will be no hanging out at the malls and no going to friends' houses," said Venzer.
Authorities say Howe accidentally shot and killed 13-year-old Lourdes Guzman DeJesus when he took a pistol out of his backpack while taking the bus to school on Nov. 20, 2012. It fired, striking Guzman DeJesus in the neck. No one else was injured.
Guzman DeJesus' mother Ady was also at the hearing. She cried repeatedly.
"At the end of the day, she had a very difficult time," said Ron Book, an attorney representing the DeJesus family. "This is the first time she has seen the shooter and the first time she has seen the parents."
As Howe and his family left, an attorney for the boy offered no comment on the case.
"She doesn't understand and doesn't find it okay that this guy is still walking around," said Book. "She does not understand that the father has still yet to make himself available to investigators to talk about how the son was able to get access (to the gun), not once, not twice, but multiple times and take it to school."
