School district employees hit with layoffs

The Broward County School Districts cuts jobs, leaving some former employees stunned.

The layoffs were promised by Broward schools Superintendent Robert Runcie months ago, but the employees who got their walking papers Wednesday were still shocked.

An estimated 15 to 20 transportation department workers -- some with 25 years or more at the board -- were called to a mystery meeting with transportation chief Chester Tindall's office. Then one by one they were told it was their last day at the school district and that they would be given severance of one month's pay.

You can see their reaction in the video above, including pictured Leslie Doocran, who had 19 years at the district as a stock clerk. In February Runcie -- who was presiding over a school board meeting at the time of the layoffs -- promised to cut $15 million from the transportation department's budget to hire more teachers.

Many more layoffs are expected.
