Shots fired at Hollywood apartment complex

1 in custody after shots fired

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Police arrested a man Thursday morning after investigating reports of shots fired inside an apartment complex in Hollywood.

The incident began at 2915 Pierce Street shortly before 6 a.m. Callers told 911 they heard four shots.

When police arrived at the scene, they found bullet casings and a broken window.

Police say Nelson Tomattis refused to cooperate with officers, forcing SWAT members to go into his apartment.

"What happened is he was walking around the apartment and he refused the instructions of the SWAT members to come out and also to surrender and he was resisting," said Lester Cochenour with the Hollywood Police Department," and at the time he put himself in a smaller room, the SWAT team made a decision to isolate that smaller room and once they isolated him in that room, they threw another distraction device and they used an impact munition to subdue him."

Tomattis, 30, was arrested about 10:45 a.m. He was charged with firing in an occupied dwelling.

"They just said something's wrong, he's in the house and shots were fired. I don't know. He doesn't know what's going on," said Tito Orozco, a friend of Tomattis. "He's a father, he's a good man. I don't know what's going on. I don't know what happened."

Tomattis also has an outstanding warrant for cocaine possession in Polk County.

People inside the complex were forced to evacuate the building for several hours.
