Tree falls on car with driver inside

But for a few inches and a few seconds, a Coconut Grove resident might not have survived the crash of a decades-old, storm-damaged Royal Poinciana that came crashing down on his car.
"I saw what I thought was a limb coming down and I thought, 'Oh my God, that branch is going to hit the hood of my car,'" said James Kaplan, hours after the ordeal Monday.
Kaplan was headed to work, just two blocks from home, when the tree hit the roof of the driver's side of his car just above the windshield.
"It was at least 50 years old about a half a block in overall span," Scott Mershon said.
The windows were crushed, a mirror broke and the frame of the brand new car buckled, but held.
The only apparent injuries were scratches visible on Kaplan's left ear.
"I kind of thought when you were at the door with the camera at the door, it was Mercedes wanting to do a commercial," Kaplan joked.
The severity of his close call does not escape him.
"You see the roof of the car caved in and I know it made contact with my head," said Kaplan. "I mean, two or three more inches and it's over."
