The woman who died after she was hit by a car while waiting for a bus outside a CVS pharmacy in Miami Gardens was identified on Wednesday.
Mary Smith, 83, was waiting for the bus with three others at Northwest 199th Street and 2nd Avenue about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday when a car slammed into them.
"This was a beautiful woman," said Cheryl Alston, Smith's granddaughter. "She loved the Lord. She trusted in God and she was headed in the direction of where she wanted to go and that was to church."
Work crews spent Wednesday replacing the bus bench that was knocked down.
Police believe the white Nissan Maxima was speeding and swerved around a slower moving black Nissan Altima, hit it, and then plowed through a bus stop where four people were waiting, including Smith. Both cars were going eastbound on 199th Street.
Several Good Samaritans heard the crash and ran in to help. Several people freed a man who was trapped underneath the car, lifting it onto its side.
"Once somebody yelled that there was a body under the car and we heard the voice of the guy that was under there, we all ran over there and we started. Everybody went kind of on three and we lifted the car up, and then we pushed it up and everybody grabbed him and pulled him from underneath the car," Conrad Hines said Tuesday.
"I say to the driver, 'If you're conscious, won't condemn you, neither will I.' She would have forgiven him as well because that's the type of person she was," said Alston.
Four people remain in critical condition following the crash. A 9-month-old child who was inside the Altima was treated and released.
Police were interviewing the driver of the white car who walked away from the crash without any injuries. No charges have been filed.
