Construction begins Monday morning on State Road A1A in Fort Lauderdale.

The Florida Department of Transportation and crews will begin to reconstruct State Road A1A this week in Fort Lauderdale.

The first phase of reconstruction begins Monday, July 28th and ends December 2014.

The stretch of road between Northeast 14th Court and Northeast 18th Street has been under repair since January of last year. The area was severely eroded during Hurricane Sandy in October of 2012.

Project 'A1A in Action' cost about $118.8 million to reconstruct. The project will include a new promenade on street parking and bicycle lanes. It will also include a decorative sea wall and new underground drainage system, which will keep seasonal flooding under control.

Parking spaces and sidewalk will be closed on the east side of A1A between Sunrise Boulevard and Northeast 14th Court. Two-way traffic, bike lane, parking and sidewalk will be maintained on the west side of A1A.

On the west side of A1A , parking spaces and sidewalk will be closed between Northeast 14th Court and Northeast 18th Street. Access will be maintained on the east side of A1A.

Repairs will take place Monday through Saturday between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. The project is expected to complete in about 2 years.
