MIAMI – A former congressional aide to U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, D-Fla., is facing battery charges after he attacked his 73-year-old mother, police said.
Alejandro Cruz was arrested Saturday morning on a charge of aggravated battery.
The former press aide made his first appearance in bond court Monday.
"I am unemployed now," Cruz revealed in court. "I stopped working. I resigned. I was forced to resign my 20-year job in Congress in September 2013."
According to the arrest report, Cruz got into a fight with his father and when his mother stepped in, he threw a speaker at her.
Police said the woman fell and possibly broke her hip. She also suffered a cut to her eye.
Ros-Lehtinen's office has not replied to a request by Local 10 News for comment.
