CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Florida Power & Light has another hearing Thursday about its proposed plan to use 100-foot-tall concrete towers to connect new nuclear reactors at Turkey Point.
Residents who live near Turkey Point voiced their complaints about the towers Wednesday.
"Monstrous, unsightly towers," said one man.
"Who's going to build with monstrosities?" added another woman.
FPL wants to use the towers to transmit electricity generated by its two new reactors -- if they're built. The company prefers the 18 miles up U.S. 1 from Cutler Bay through Pinecrest, South Miami, Coral Gables, and Miami's Coconut Grove neighborhood.
"It will provide clean energy for our customers," said Bill Orlove with FPL. "In fact, this project will save our customers probably $75 billion in fossil fuel costs."
The city of Coral Gables sued FPL, alleging the size and scope of the company's U.S. 1 plan violated its decades-old franchise agreement.
The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Coral Gables Youth Center, 405 University Drive.
Julio Gundian, who lives in Coral Gables, said he'd be at the meeting, asking FPL to put the towers somewhere else.
FPL has the final decision on where the transmission line goes.
